Our girls were fairly devastated by being banned from the Vortex, so once they each hit 18, we went for a meal shortly thereafter. This night, we ate at the Midtown location, “we” being me and our oldest daughter. They have two locations in town, the slightly more upscale midtown location (Peachtree near 8th) and the original in Little Five Points (where you enter through the mouth of a giant skull). ![]() Around the same time that the WSJ declared the Ghetto Burger at Ann’s Snack Bar as the best burger in America, the Vortex made the best of Atlanta list, along with the bleu cheese burger at the Earl as being the top three. That single act pretty much sums up their “like us if you want, we don’t really care” attitude. They were the ones that forced restaurants to make a choice. And, if you didn’t like the decision, they said not to complain to them, complain to your local representative. They will card you at the door, if there’s a question. They said, basically, that they earned more money from smokers than they ever did from children, so no one under 18 is allowed in at any time. When the Georgia General Assembly passed a law several years back requiring the removal of the smoking section from any restaurant that served children, 99%+ of the restaurants banned smoking all of the time. ![]() The Vortex Bar and Grill is a giant on the Atlanta burger landscape. The restaurant has long had a 21-and-over-only policy, which coincides with the fact that smoking cigarettes was always allowed on the premises, even though none of the siblings smoke. The Vortex, which Benoit opened with his brother Hank and sister Suzanne in 1992, serves a variety of burgers and a large selection of craft beers. The post laid out several figures from the poll:Ħ0.6 percent of respondents said they’ve been patrons of The Vortex for 6 years or longerĥ4.6 percent said that they’ve smoked and another 25.7 percent said that they used to smoke but no longer doĥ1.5 percent majority said they do not patronize The Vortex (or patronize less) because smoking is allowedĦ9.5 percent said they would like to see the smoking policy change Just take a deep breath – in the newly clean air of The Vortex. And this really is only about a smoking policy in a bar. As always, we are doing our best to please our core group of supporters. But I hope everyone keeps one thing in perspective. I suppose many people will celebrate these decisions, while others may be slightly disappointed. We believe that this policy change will help satisfy the largest number of patrons possible. These policy changes will all go into affect immediately at both Vortex locations – like, right now, even as you’re reading this – right in the middle of Atlanta’s 2019 Super Bowl celebration. At The Vortex-L5P, smoking will be allowed on the open fenced waiting area just outside the bar, known as the “playpen.” The smoking of cigars, pipes, clove cigarettes or anything deemed “illegal” by the evil overlords will continue to be forbidden. At The Vortex-Midtown, the smoking of cigarettes (and e-cigarettes) will be allowed when dining outside on our sidewalk patio. ![]()
